Nothing has yet been done, but Will Smith is in negotiations to resume the role of the blue genius to which the late Robin Williams had lent his voice in the animated film of 1993.
After Mulan (by Niki Caro) and Dumbo (by Tim Burton), the studio with big ears is now interested in a live version of his classic Aladdin released in 1993. It is no surprise: Beauty and the Beast Recently crossed the billion-dollar mark of revenue worldwide. It is even better than The Book of the Jungle, in 2016.
The Deadline website tells us today that comedian Will Smith, already approached for Dumbo, is now in talks for the role of genius in Aladdin’s adaptation, entrusted to the director of Snatch and Sherlock Holmes: Guy Ritchie. No names have yet been confirmed for the distribution of Aladdin.
The choice of Will Smith is not a total surprise since the comedian has also distinguished himself in the world of music with rap albums released at the turn of the 20th and 21st century. Aladdin’s live action adaptation has actually promised to keep the original movie songs and – perhaps – to add a few others, such as La Belle et la Bête.
The shooting of the film is scheduled for this year. No release date has yet been released by Disney Studios for Aladdin.
